Harness racing in the Newcastle area
dates back to the early 1930s, and for many years the
Newcastle Trotting Club raced at the tiny Broadmeadow
Show Ground.
In the 1980s the Harness Racing Club
Committee, along with a number of other interested parties,
developed a bold plan to relocate club. This became
a reality in 1989 when the International Sports Centre
became the new home for the sport in the area.
The Newcastle Paceway, located behind
EnergyAustralia Stadium, is a magnificent centre with
a track that is regarded as one of the best in the country.
It is also the only track in NSW that is able to start
10 runners in one line off the front in mobile racing.
The crowning jewel in the club's development
was the opening of the award-winning grandstand in 1994.
It is a four level complex and seats 1,100 spectators.
It also features the 250-seat Pacers restaurant, three
bars, a function room, two snack bars, general public
and member's areas and a winner's room where successful
connections at the paceway can celebrate.
The club runs meetings predominantly
on Saturday evenings, averaging three a month. In total
the club runs 42 meetings a year.
